Nick tops weekly ratings for April beating out Cartoon Network and Disney for best basic cable for the month

The weekly ratings are out and Nick tops April over its competitors as the most watched basic cable network for the entire month. Here’s how it happened:

NEW YORK–May 1, 2012–Nickelodeon closes April as basic cable’s top total day network with total viewers. The win was driven by Nickelodeon’s 25th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards, which hosted by Will Smith and featuring the biggest and brightest stars in Hollywood, ranks as basic cable’s top telecast with total viewers (6.9 million) in April. The star-studded, slime-filled extravaganza also scored the top spot with kids 6-11 (12.6/2.7 million) and tweens 9-14 (12.5/2.6 million). April also featured the premiere of Nick’s latest hit animated series The Legend of Korra, which closed the month as basic cable’s top kids’ program with total viewers.

Nickelodeon ended the month with a solid ratings performance, posting a winning week (4/23/12 – 4/29/12) as basic cable’s top total day network with kids 2-11 (2.3/818,000) and total viewers (1.5 million). The weekly win was fueled by a strong performance by The Legend of Korra, which drew 4 million total viewers with its Saturday morning (April 28 11 a.m. ET/PT) new episode.

A new episode of iCarly, “iHalfoween” premiered on Saturday night (April 28, 8 p.m. ET/PT) and drew 2.9 million total viewers, ranking as the number-one program for the week with tweens 9-14 (5.6/1.2 million). In “iHalfoween” the iCarly gang implements a half-year Halloween celebration. However, their bright idea gets crashed when Nevel returns to his old tricks and shenanigans causing the party to spin out of control.

Nick’s digital nets also had solid performances, with Nicktoons posting double-digit increases with key kids 6-11 (+28%) and tweens 9-14 (+22%). The net’s performance was driven by the premiere of Wild Grinders, (Friday, April 27, at 7p.m. ET), which drew 399,000 total viewers and posted double-digit increases over last year with kids 6-11 (1.1/152,000, +38%) and tweens 9-14 (.8/106,000, +60%). Wild Grinders is a 26-episode half-hour new animated series inspired by skateboarding pro Rob Dyrdek’s real-life experiences and follows the adventures of a group of friends bonded by their love of the exciting sport. Following the premiere, Wild Grinders will air regularly on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. (ET) on Nicktoons.


Cartoon Network and Adult Swim’s ratings have dominated each week, but it wasn’t enough to successfully top Nick for April:


For the entire month of April 2012, Adult Swim ranked as basic cable’s #1 network for Total Day Delivery of young adult and young men demos-adults 18-34, 18-49 & 18-24, as well as men 18-34, 18-49 & 18-24. The network also ranked #3 for the month in Prime Time (behind TBS & ESPN) for delivery of targeted adults 18-34. Among its highlights, Adult Swim’s average Total Day delivery among adults 18-34 (536,000) grew by 2% and adults 18-24 (306,000) by 9%.
Across April, Thursday night’s new episodes of Adult Swim original series Eagleheart (12 a.m.) ranked #1 in its time period among adults 18-34, 18-24 and among men 18-24. Compared to the same time period last year, average delivery of adults 18-24 (409,000) increased by 13% and men 18-24 (261,000) by 15%.
On Sunday nights, original series Loiter Squad (11:30 p.m.) ranked #1 in its time period among adults 18-34, 18-49 & 18-24 and men 18-34, 18-24. Average adults 18-24 delivery (463,000) grew by 6%.
Adult Swim programming accounted for 21 of the top 50 telecasts of the month on basic cable among adults 18-34 (more than any other network), and 13 of the top 50 among men 18-34, also more than any other network.


Across April 2012, Cartoon Network stood out as television’s #1 network for early evening prime (7-9 p.m.) delivery of boys 2-11, 6-11 & 9-14. Compared to last year, average prime delivery gains among all kid demos increased by strong double digits-kids 6-11 (685,000) by 31%, kids 2-11 (952,000) by 19% and kids 9-14 (555,000) by 45%.
Cartoon Network ranked #1 throughout April on Monday nights among all other television networks with kids 2-11, 6-11 & 9-14 and boys 2-11, 6-11 & 9-14. Original animated comedy Regular Show (8 p.m.) was April’s #1 program on Monday nights among all kids demos. Compared to last year, average kids 6-11 delivery (1,120,000) improved by 41%, kids 2-11 (1,461,000) by 40% and kids 9-14 (983,000) by 51%.
Across the month, Cartoon Network was the #1 television destination for all boys (2-11, 6-11 & 9-14) in early prime (7-9 p.m.) Monday through Friday, and on Sunday nights. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights posted double and triple-digit delivery gains among targeted kid and boy demos, ranging between 18% and 121%.
Among Cartoon Network’s newest programming ventures, Ninjago (Wednesday, 8 p.m.) earned impressive triple-digit delivery gains across the board and ranked #1 across all target demos: kids 6-11 (1,420,000) increased by 203%, kids 2-11 (1,964,000) by 194% and kids 9-14 (941,000) by 210%. Immediately following, the live-action comedy-adventure series Level Up (Wednesday, 8:30 p.m.) ranked #1 in its time period throughout April among all kids and boys demos on basic cable-average kids 6-11 delivery (566,000) grew by 30%, kids 2-11 (781,000) by 26% and kids 9-14 (458,000) by 41%.
Total Day delivery averages also grew in April 2012 by double digits vs. last year’s time period: overall kids 6-11 delivery (392,000) increased by 19%, kids 2-11 (586,000) by 12% and kids 9-14 (310,000) by 23%.
Saturday morning (6:30 – 11 a.m.) also earned double-digit delivery gains among kids 2-11, 6-11 & 9-14 vs. last year, thanks primarily to impress performances from Thundercats (9:30 a.m.), Green Lantern (10 a.m.) and Young Justice (10:30 a.m.). Overall kids 2-11 delivery (600,000) improved by 15%, kids 6-11 (433,000) by 14% and kids 9-14 (406,000) by 34%.


And as for Disney:

For April 2012, the #1 cable TV series among Kids 2-5 and the #1 preschool series among Women 18-49 is “Doc McStuffins” on the daily Disney Junior programming block on Disney Channel. Among Boys 2-5, the Disney Junior block delivered the Top 3 cable TV series — “Doc McStuffins,” “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” and “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.”

For the third consecutive month, Disney Channel ranked as April’s #1 network in Total Day among Kids 2-11, for the 12th consecutive month among Kids 6-11 and for the 24th consecutive month in Tweens 9-14 – all records for Disney Channel. In Total Viewers, Disney Channel tied for #1 (0.5 rating) against all cable competitors.

April was Disney XD’s most watched month in the channel’s history (including its 10 years as Toon Disney) in Primetime in Total Viewers (394,000), Kids 6-14 (220,000), Boys 6-14 (139,000), Kids 6-11 (173,000), Boys 6-11 (109,000), Tweens 9-14 (147,000) and Boys 9-14 (96,000).


Cartoon Network heads to Atlantis this summer, to the Bahamas that is! April Bluefish has the summer plans of what events they’re holding for the entire summer period.


April Bluefish (holiday reporter):Cartoon Network will come to life this summer at Atlantis, Paradise Island resort in The Bahamas. Infused with family-fun, the summer festivities will run May 25 – Sept. 3, 2012 promising even more Cartoon Network entertainment than last year. Guests can anticipate branded elements from the network’s top-rated and award-winning animated series Adventure Time including an Adventure Time themed poolside dive-in theater and a Cartoon Network, multi-brand character takeover of one of Atlantis’ most popular dining destinations, Seagrapes restaurant. Other one-of-a-kind experiences include: a costumed character parade through Marina Village featuring Cartoon Network’s much loved stars, advanced screenings of the new and highly anticipated Cartoon Network series Ben 10: Omniverse, a huge star-studded concert event featuring Gym Class Heroes to be held on June 1, and guests are invited to participate in the Cartoon Network Studios Fantasy Camp, occurring in early August, featuring members from the Emmy Award-winning studio.

“We are excited to partner with Cartoon Network again this summer with resort programming as well as a summer fantasy camp,” says George Markantonis, President and Managing Director of Kerzner International, Bahamas . “Atlantis prides itself on family-friendly entertainment, and we hope our guests enjoy this added-value experience.”

This summer, Cartoon Network will takeover Seagrapes restaurant and will host an Adventure Time themed poolside dive-in theater 4 nights a week. Both of these interactive events will give Atlantis guests an opportunity to eat, watch and engage with their favorite Cartoon Network brands and iconic characters. Seagrapes, located in Beach Tower , will be open for Cartoon Network themed breakfast and dinner seven days a week. Guests will be entertained by Cartoon Network costumed characters, encouraged to participate in crafting events and watch screenings from their favorite Cartoon Network shows like Adventure Time, Level Up, The Amazing World of Gumball, Ninjago and Ben 10. The Adventure Time swimming pool event will feature a poolside theater with elements of a live-show including trivia and cool prizing all while guests cool down in the pool watching their favorite shows.

At the Cartoon Network Studios Fantasy Camp aspiring cartoonists are invited to learn the fundamentals of animation. Campers will immerse themselves in animation technology, hand drawing techniques, flip book basics, character creation, voice-acting, and so much more all while guided by experts from the Emmy Award-winning Cartoon Network Studios.

Atlantis is the perfect summer partner for our brand,” says Brenda Piper, Chief Marketing Officer for Cartoon Network. “The addition of the Cartoon Network Studios Fantasy Camp really elevates our engagement with kids and their families as guests will actually be able to create and immerse themselves in Cartoon Network like never before.”

The program officially kicks off May 25 with a spectacular concert event on Friday, June 1 headlined by the international chart topping group Gym Class Heroes. Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy was responsible for one of the biggest songs of 2010 with his smash solo single “Billionaire (featuring Bruno Mars).” Last year, Gym Class Heroes scored their second #1 hit with “Stereo Hearts (featuring Adam Levine),” the lead single from their fourth Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen release.

For the first two weeks of May, radio stations in top-markets will make numerous daily mentions of Cartoon Network @ Atlantis June 1st concert, include banner ads promoting the concert on their websites, and give away airfare and accommodations to 20 winners (and their guests) to Atlantis for the weekend of June 1st to see the concert live!

This summer’s event will be produced by Pop2Life, LLC, a full service event marketing agency specializing in leveraging the power of pop culture to spark imagination, form powerful connections, build tremendous buzz, and ultimately drive brand awareness.


We’re in the 500’s this time as everyone continues to speculate that there will be a 4th season as 561 signatures are currently on site. And there may be more signatures for the entire month ahead. Keep signing Penguins fans!
